Mini-making project 1 - A mask
Here's how to make a mask! Please scroll through the images for complete instructions. Feel free to adjust the decorations to your personal taste. Make sure you get an adult to help you do anything you find tricky, especially when using scissors. Have fun!
Thin card, elastic, glue stick, pencil, scissors, ruler, old wrapping paper, feathers, sparkly gems and coloured paper.
Take your thin piece of card and draw a cross through the centre of it.
Now draw an oval shape, joining up the four quarters.
This will create your mask shape.
Now cut out this oval shape.
Mark where you want your eyes holes to be cut out, here they are about 5cm above the central line, you can make them lower of higher up on your mask.
Draw the shape you would like to cut out for your eye holes.
Cut out eye holes. Get an adult to help, if you find this part tricky.
Carefully push your pencil through the card about 1cm from edge of mask, making a hole for the elastic to thread through later. You might want to hold it up to your face first, to measure where to make the hole. Again, get an adult to help you with this part.
Take your coloured paper and cut out a selection of feather shaped pieces, or any other shape you like.
Cut slits on each side of all of the feather shapes.
Using your glue stick the feather shapes on the the back of your mask (the side with the pencil lines).
Turn mask over and apply glue to the bottom half of your mask.
Stick your wrapping paper scrap (or another piece of patterned paper) over the glued section.
Cut the excess wrapping paper off from around the edge of the mask.
Cut out shapes for the lips, nose and cheeks for you mask and stick them on.
Cut your coloured paper into 6cm strips.
Cut the strips into smaller pieces, approximately 8cm long.
Cut slits across each piece of coloured paper, approximately 5mm apart and 4cm long.
Roll each small piece or paper around your pencil, created a curve in the paper.
Apply glue around on the back of the mask around the edge.
Stick the prepared pieces of paper around the edge of your mask.
Apply glue to the top of each of your feathers and stick them just below your paper feathers on the front of your mask.
Now stick your sparkly gems, or sequins anywhere on your mask to finish off decorating.
Measure 30-35cm of elastic and cut with scissors.
Thread and tie your elastic through each hole on the sides of your mask.
Your mask is now finished. Go play, indoors or out!
